In the last week of school in 2018 Burnside SHS sent 2 teams to descend on Melbourne to compete at the 35th Australian Volleyball Schools Cup. This was Burnside SHS’s 24th trip to the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup. The AVSC is the largest school sporting event held in Australia for school-aged children. 2018 was again the largest AVSC in history with more than 6000 athletes in over 550 teams from 150 schools across Australia and New Zealand.
The Burnside 2018 tour group saw a mix of students from grade 8 – 10. It was a fantastic week of volleyball with our students getting the opportunity to compete against schools from across Australia, as well as getting out and seeing a little of Melbourne. This tournament really is the pinnacle of competition for schools Volleyball and our students gain enormously from the experience, both physically and socially.
Burnside teams’ results in 2018 AVSC were:
  •  Year 10 Girls Div. 1 – 2nd Silver Medal
  •  Year 9 Boys Div. 2 – 6th
The Year 10 Girls Gold medal final really was a highlight of the week for our group. I look forward to other BIG TEAM spirit moments in 2019 for the Burnside Bandits! Volleyball will be soon in swing again at Burnside for 2019. We are currently in the process of forming our training squads and teams in preparation for training and upcoming competitions. Those teams are: Year 12 Boys, Year 12 Girls, Year 11 Boys, Year 11 Girls, Year 10 Boys, Year 10 Girls, Year 9 Boys, Year 9 Girls, Year 8 Boys, Year 8 Girls and Year 7 Boys and Girls teams.
Any students interested in joining one of our Volleyball Teams should see Mr Schwieso in the Student Centre Staffroom. We are particularly interested in any boys or girls in Year 7 who would like to try out for a position in Year 7 Pursuit of Excellence Studies: Volleyball Class for 2019. See Mr Schwieso for an application form ASAP.
The Year 7 Pursuit of Excellence Studies: Volleyball selection trials will be occurring towards the end of term 2. The Year 7 students who apply will receive a letter about this prior to the trials. Any students in Year 7 who wishes to apply for this course have until the week before the trial day to apply.
Finally, all of our players will shortly receive a copy of the first Burnside Bandits Volleyball Newsletter # 1 for the year. The newsletter will contain information for parents and students on training’s, upcoming tournaments, Term calendar of events, etc. If students miss out on collecting one of these newsletters they can see their coach or Mr Schwieso in the PE staffroom.
