Senior Digital Devices 2019

21/09/2018
Each Year 11 student at Burnside State High School in 2019 will be required to purchase a digital device supplied by the school to assist in their senior studies.

The information pack for the Year 11 students in 2019 has been mailed out to provide you with the details for this Senior Digital Device. Included in this information pack is this letter, a Senior Digital Device Charter which details financial aspects and obligations and a Senior Digital Device Policy Booklet which explains policy and procedure in regard to the Senior Digital Device. If this Senior Digital Device Pack is lost it can also be accessed on the school’s website https://burnsideshs.eq.edu.au/Curriculum/Seniorschool/Pages/Seniorschool.aspx

The digital device will cost approximately $600, including an extended 2 year warranty.  This $600 is an approximate cost as the cost will change at any given time a purchase is made due to the fluctuation of the United States dollar exchange rate.

There is an initial deposit of $150 to be paid by COB Friday 9th November, 2018 (Week 5, Term 4) and the Senior Digital Device Charter is also to be returned to the school office by Friday 9th November, 2018. This will ensure your student is issued with their digital device at the beginning of the 2019 school year. The digital device will be purchased by the school in Week 7 of Term 4, 2018 so it can be ready at the beginning of the 2019 school year. Once the device is purchased the exact price of the device will be known and that will determine the remainder of the payment schedule which will be outlined to parents.

Information about this Senior Digital Device has been presented to students on a number of assemblies, presented to the P&C at meetings, mailed out in a parent/guardian letter in May and in July with student Report Cards. Details have also been included in the May newsletter and on the school’s official Facebook page in August. If you have not received copies of the letters sent home, please contact the front office to request a copy.

What: 2019 Yr 11 students are required to purchase a digital device through the school. This will include an Apple Wi-fi 128GB (9.7inch), quality case, AppleCare +, Apple management software and apps/programs required for school studies. However if students have a working Horizon’s laptop students may use that instead (see exceptions). The AppleCare + for iPad and two claim max insurance policy is detailed in the Senior Digital Device Policy booklet.

When:  Pay the $150 deposit and also sign the Senior Digital Device Charter included in this pack and return to the school office by Friday 9th November, 2018 to ensure your student is issued with a digital device at the beginning of the 2019 school year.

Why: The new Senior Assessment and Tertiary Entrance system will be introduced across Queensland Year 11 in 2019 for our Year 11 students.  Key changes include:
the introduction of common external assessment
strengthening the quality and comparability of school-based assessment
replacement of the Overall Position (OP) with the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR)
(For more information visit the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) website at https://www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/senior/new-snr-assessment-te/information-school-communities). With this new Senior Assessment and Tertiary Entrance system there is a greater requirement for development of future focused information, communication and technology skills, along with student lead projects and investigations requiring online access for research.  As a result, all senior students at Burnside State High School will be required to have access to an Education Queensland digital device for use at school and home. This 24/7 access will provide a platform for your student to successfully complete their senior years and achieve the best possible outcome.  At the completion of Year 12, and when full payment has been made, the student will assume ownership of the device and the school based filters will be removed which will enable the device to be unlocked.

Exceptions: Students who already have Horizons laptops will be able to continue to use them if they are in good working condition, even though the warranty has expired. These Horizon’s laptop students may not need to purchase a new electronic device while the Horizon laptop is in good working condition, however if the laptop no longer works they will need to purchase a new electronic device supplied by the school. Please note:  Students will not be able to bring their own electronic device for use at school as the school does not have the infrastructure to support non Education Queensland devices.

If you have any questions regarding this please contact Boris Croft at Burnside State High School.
