Burnside State High School aims to support the academic outcomes of Indigenous and Torres Strait Island students and to increase the cultural awareness of all students by engaging the whole school population in activities which build positive relationships.

 

Burnside State High School, through the support of creative Indigenous Student Support programs, has high expectations for Indigenous and Torres Strait Island youth in terms of effort, behaviour, achievement and commitment.

Recognition of Indigenous People and Culture

  • Observance of cultural protocols (acknowledgements, flags displayed at front of school)

  • Cultural representatives informing curriculum and teaching practice when embedding Indigenous perspectives in the curriculum

 

Learning Support

  • Targeted, scheduled tutorial support for those students who have challenges in Literacy and Numeracy
  • Indigenous Teacher Aide available to assist Indigenous students academically and culturally

 

Co-Curricular Activities

  • Murri Pathways – vocational support for Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander students
