School life provides opportunities for young people to develop leadership skills. Student leadership provides important benefits for individual students and Burnside State High School. Students have the potential to positively influence the school environment and the behaviour of their fellow students by becoming advocates for positive contributions within the school community.

Burnside State High School has a variety of opportunities to become a leader within the school setting. The school encourages these leadership roles to be spread amongst the student body and includes formal roles and responsibilities and broader based leadership opportunities.

Broad based leadership opportunities include activities such as Rotary Interact Club, Graduation Committee, Volleyball Excellence Program- Coaching/ Refereeing/ Captains, International School Ambassadors and cultural activities such as home stay.

There are opportunities for formal leadership positions in the Student Representative Council (SRC), Indigenous Student Council, Beacon Program and Peer Mentor Program. Through these positions students are encouraged to apply leadership skills to initiatives that strengthen the school community and the communities in which they live. Student Leaders must be committed to upholding the core values of Burnside High and demonstrate attitude and behaviour that reflects care, consideration and cooperation.

Burnside State High School recognises the significance of developing a leadership culture in young people to positively influence attitudes and behaviours to improve the school culture. All students have the potential to develop leadership skills.
